Exeter is located in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. It is one of the four original townships in the province, and originally included Newmarket, Newfields, Brentwood, Epping and Fremont. It is situated where the Exeter River feeds the tidal Squamscott River and lies entirely within the Piscataqua River watershed. Exeter is comprised of a 20 square mile area, of which 19.6 square miles is land and .4 square miles is water. It sits 250 feet above sea level at its highest point.
Exeter was once home to the Squamscott Indians, a sub-tribe of the Pennacook nation. The tribes had left the area by 1725. The town held the role of New Hampshire's capital of the Revolutionary War for fourteen years, until the city of Concord became the new capital.
Early settlers arrived from Hingham, Massachusetts, and include the Gilman, Folsom and Leavitt families. In 1827, the Exeter Manufacturing Company was established along the river. The town included merchants and businesses that manufactured shoes, saddles, harnesses, lumber, boxes, bricks, carriages and bicycles. In 1840, the Boston & Maine Railroad entered the town.
Exeter is home to The Gilman Garrison House, a National Historic Landmark, and the American Independence Museum. Both are former homes of the Gillman family.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, the town of Exeter was home to 14,058 people, 5,898 households, 3,715 families and 6,107 housing units. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.94.
